Excavations 2009: Summary accounts of archaeological excavations in Ireland

This volume of the bulletin once again contains a vastly reduced number of summaries when compared to the middle years of the ‘noughties’, the final years of the boom. The last volume with such few entries was that for 1999, with 907 reports, and it is possible that the figure will hover around one thousand for the foreseeable future (there are 883 entries this year, with a further 89 for which licences were issued but reports were not submitted in time for publication). This year, at least all 32 counties are still represented and, as has so often been the case in the past, more work was carried out in Dublin than in any other county, with 94 summaries in the bulletin and nine further sites for which licences were issued. This is followed by Cork, with 68 sites (and twelve further licences issued), and then Antrim, with 63 sites (and two further licences). The least numbers of sites were explored in Monaghan and Leitrim, with three sites each, and Carlow, with three summaries submitted and a further two licences issued.
