• Heritage Guide No. 89: Castledermot

This publication is a short illustrated guide to Castledermot, a small town in south County Kildare, that has a rich archaeological and historical heritage. The choice of this location for settlement probably arose from its position on a natural routeway leading between areas of higher ground from the Barrow Valley north of Carlow to the lands further north via west Wicklow (close to the route taken by the new M9 motorway). In later medieval times this strategic siting and its relationship to the Pale certainly added to the importance—but also, at times, to the vulnerability—of the town.

Covers the main features of interest and includes a map that incorporates new discoveries, that gives new insight into the location of  the original town wall
