Heritage Guide No. 87: SLIGO- A historic urban centre on the Atlantic Coast

This publication is a short illustrated guide to Sligo. It covers the period from when Sligo began as a thirteenth-century Anglo-Norman manorial settlement when as a strategic nodal site, it was frequently fought over from the time of its foundation to the close of the Williamite Wars. Throughout the eighteenth century it was defined by its port, the third-largest harbour on the western seaboard. From the 1830s onwards, its role as a market, services and administrative centre led to a sustained period of economic prosperity. Political uncertainty after World War I and the collapse of port traffic resulted in prolonged economic stagnation, which preserved Sligo’s historic core until the late 1960s.
