THE BUILT HERITAGE OF LOUGH ERNE.
The Lough Erne Landscape Partnership (LELP) was established in 2018 to promote the unique built, natural and cultural heritage of the Fermanagh Lakelands through the delivery of a wide range of strategic and community-based activities and projects. The footprint of the area encompassed by the LELP comprises four Landscape Character Areas (LCAs), as defined by the Northern Ireland Landscape Character Assessment in 2000, covering Upper and Lower Lough Erne, an area of some 500km² including over 300km² of open water. Within this boundary lies the lough, its surrounding shoreline, the towns of Enniskillen and Lisnaskea, and over 150 islands. The monuments, buildings and structures to be found across this landscape, from megalithic tombs and crannogs to grand estates and thatched cottages, are testament to the region’s rich and vibrant past. The guide presents an overview of the diverse nature of this resource, stretching from prehistoric times through to the twentieth century.
