TWO GREAT BOOKS ONE GREAT PRICE!

Mapping SOUTH KERRY

South Kerry was always a place with its own distinctive personality, and once the heart of a great Irish lordship. Using some 400 illustrations, this book explores how maps have recorded more than 450 years of far-reaching changes to the landscape, society, and economy of south Kerry.

Presented are maps from the Down Survey and the later Ordnance Survey of Ireland, and lesser-known maps that offer perspectives on a wide range of topics relating to south Kerry. Here are maps that document the condition and ownership of the land and chart the seas.

Maps are a crucial testament to the changing landscape and development of the world we live in. They provide for an innovative and distinctive insight into how the past has molded the present in on of Ireland’s most beautiful regions.

Arnold Horner formerly lectured in geography at University College Dublin. He has compiled several books on the mapping history of Irish counties: Offaly (2005), Meath (2006), Sligo (2011) and Laois (2018).  Mapping Laois won the Nilsson Local Heritage Award at Listowel Writers’ Week.

The Evangelical Campaign in Dingle and West Kerry 1825-45.

Bryan MacMahon gives a comprehensive overview of the origins and progress of the Protestant evangelical campaign in West Kerry from 1825 to 1845.  These Church of Ireland missionaries were motivated by a desire to save Irish-speaking Catholics from what they saw as superstitious practices and enthralment to Rome. This study brings personalities to life and records the long-lost voices and values of those on both sides of the religious divide.

The work of the evangelicals was widely hailed as a model of a successful missionary campaign; however, it evoked a furious response from Catholic priests. The war of words between clergymen of both persuasions was fomented by rival local newspapers, reaching a climax in a notorious libel case in March 1845.
