The archaeology and history of Ferns Co. Wexford.
Ferns village, located in the southeast corner of Ireland in county Wexford, has a long fascinating history. From the end of the sixth century it became an important monastic site under St. Aidan and in the twelfth century was the home of Dermot MacMurrough, the then king of Leinster, before later becoming a Norman stronghold.
The book is aimed at a general audience and takes the reader through the prehistoric, medieval and early modern periods, explaining the various characteristics of each and what evidence has been found for them in Ferns. Evidence of prehistoric funerary activity hints at a pre-existing significance that may have influenced the later establishment of a monastery on the site. Likewise, excavations have revealed features associated with its importance as a monastic centre and later medieval town before its eventual decline in status from the thirteenth century onwards. Various illustrations, photos and maps provide a visual aid to the reader that simplifies and encourages them to engage with the information. As well as showcasing archaeology within the village, the results of investigations at the nearby medieval church site at Clone are also included. Having an association with St. Aidan, coupled with its close proximity to Ferns, the discovery of crop marks surrounding the site during the dry summer of 2018 prompted research that has thus far confirmed a monastic origin with a prehistoric connection linked to the discovery of passage tomb rock art.
Barry Lacey grew up a short distance outside the village of Ferns and from a young age had a keen interest in local history and heritage. Ferns close proximity and family ties meant it was regularly frequented growing up with his grandfather Peter owning a bike shop along the main street, just under the shadow of Ferns Castle. Barry is a graduate of University College Cork where he obtained a HigherDiploma in Archaeology followed by a Masters in Archaeological Excavation.
