• The Curse and Scourge of All Irishmen.

General Henry Lawes Lutterell, Second Earl of Carhampton.

This book dissects the life and career of Henry Lawes Luttrell, Earl of Carhampton — a man whose name became synonymous with coercion, cruelty, and colonial violence. Rising through patronage and privilege, Luttrell forged his career not through statesmanship, but through intimidation, force, and ruthless loyalty to imperial authority.

Henry Lawes Luttrell, second earl of Carhampton, was a peer of the British realm with extensive estates in Ireland and England; a British army general who saw active service in America and Portugal during the Seven Years’ War, and who was commander in chief in Ireland in the late 1790s, where he was responsible for a military establishment in excess of 30,000 men; and a politician with a parliamentary career that spanned six decades and that encompassed time in the Irish House of Commons, the Irish House of Lords and the British House of Commons. Despite these many achievements, Carhampton is little known today. When he does surface in historiography, he is a pantomime villain with a reputation for brutality, corruption and debauchery.
